In a significant relief effort, 308 market vendors in Kapchorwa District have received financial support from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) following a devastating fire that crippled their livelihoods. The tragic incident, which occurred in the early hours of January 4, 2025, left many stalls, goods, and retail spaces reduced to ashes, severely affecting families who rely on the market for their daily income.

The distribution exercise, which was described as peaceful and successful by Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Mr. Sakajja Martin, ensured that no vendor was left behind. Out of the 308 beneficiaries, 242 whose names were captured in the official list each received UGX 40,000. The remaining 66 vendors, whose names did not initially appear on the list, were each given UGX 20,000, demonstrating a commendable effort to provide equitable support to all affected individuals.

“We appreciate the government’s quick response and commitment to assisting our market vendors,” said Mr. Sakajja Martin during the distribution event. “The exercise was very successful and peaceful, and I applaud the collaborative efforts that made this possible.”

The government’s intervention amounted to UGX 10 million, designated for immediate food relief for the affected vendors. In addition, Kapchorwa District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Phyliss Chemutai, generously contributed an additional UGX 1 million, bringing the total support to UGX 11 million.

Hon. Chemutai’s gesture was highly appreciated by the vendors and local leaders alike. Her contribution ensured that even those not listed initially could receive some assistance, reinforcing the importance of inclusivity and community support during challenging times.

Several vendors expressed gratitude for the timely intervention, noting that the financial aid, though modest, would help them recover from the disaster’s immediate aftermath. One vendor remarked, “The fire destroyed everything I had worked for, but this support gives me hope during these tough times”

As Kapchorwa District continues to navigate the recovery process, further management and strategic interventions are being considered to fully restore the market operations. The incident underscores the importance of fire safety measures and disaster preparedness within local trading hubs.

Mr. Sakajja Martin and Hon. Chemutai’s coordinated efforts, alongside the government’s swift response, set a strong precedent for addressing community crises with compassion and efficiency. The resilience of the Kapchorwa market vendors is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the people, as they begin the journey toward recovery and rebuilding their livelihoods.
