KAMPALA, UGANDA — The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission, chaired by Dr. Tanga Odoi, has nullified the results of the July 17th party primaries in Kapchorwa District, citing widespread electoral malpractice.

The decision followed a high-level meeting held today in Kampala between the Commission and several aggrieved candidates from Tingey County, Kapchorwa Municipality, and the Kapchorwa District Woman MP race. The candidates had petitioned the Commission, accusing electoral officials of mismanaging the process.

In a statement released after the meeting, Dr. Tanga Odoi confirmed that the Commission had found credible evidence of irregularities, including allegations of corruption, voter bribery, and gross misconduct by the election officials.

At the center of the scandal is Mr. Kamonges Akram, the Kapchorwa District Registrar, who is currently in police custody. He was reportedly found in possession of UGX 8 million, suspected to be bribe money linked to the botched primaries.

“This election was marred by corruption and a breakdown in the electoral process. As a Commission, we cannot allow such practices to go unpunished,” said Dr. Odoi. “We have nullified the results, and a fresh date for the primaries will be communicated soon.”

The nullification has sparked renewed hope among aspirants and voters alike, with many calling for tighter supervision and transparency in the forthcoming repeat elections.
