Kapchorwa District leadership has halted the collection of money allegedly meant for opening up accounts for residents in the disaster prone area within Tumboboi and Kaptyanya Sub-Counties in Kapchorwa.
The team led by the RDC Ms Deborah Mugerwa halted the exercise citing extortion saying that she “had received a team to her office with complaints that they were being demanded UGx 200,000 or else their names would be erased from the list allegedly to qualify for compensation” following a spilt rock that will endanger lives and property if disaster strikes.
Other complaints stem from an ongoing collection of UGX 25,000 from residents in around Kaptyanya Sub-County allegedly for the same cause. Elizabeth Chepkwemoi, the Parish Chief Siron ward revealed that the LC1 chairpersons around the area had already written names and started collecting money to open accounts following instructions from an unknown people.
On her part, Kapchorwa district Woman MP Hon Phylis Chemutai warned the residents of conmen and their craftiness that can appear so real and asked the residents to always be vigilant and avoid falling victim.
“…the conmen must have taken advantage of your desperation for compensation and are now utilizing all strategies to get money out of you” said Hon Chemutai.
The cracked rock located in the East division of Kapchorwa Municipality extends beneath the two sub-counties of Kaptanya and Tumboboi in Kapchorwa district.
